About the Artform
The word Kalamkari comes from the Kalam and Kari. It originated in the state of Andhra Pradesh and is a folk art form. It was traditionally painted onto a cotton or silk fabric with the help of a bamboo pen by using natural or vegetable dyes. There are two main styles of Kalamkari- the block printed that is practiced in the town of Machilipatnam and the hand-painted style that is largely practiced in the town of Srikalahasti.
About the Session
In this session, you will learn about Kalamkari, the artist will make the national bird of India- the peacock, in the beautiful and intricate art form of Kalamkari. Along with this, the artist will be sharing a lot of insights about the art from starting from the history of the artform, tips on how to gain consistency and patience in drawing intricate designs, and above all enjoying the art process as a form of art therapy.
This is a 'beginner-friendly' session. (Age: 15+).

Aabdika Sharma is an artist and art educator and has conducted several workshops and cultural festivals for students across India. She is the founder of an experimental art space, Cafe of Creatives. Her work has been exhibited in Naimisha - National Gallery of Modern Art, Mood Indigo, DLF Promenade among many others. She has also won several awards for her work in the fine arts.
