About the Artform

It is a tradition of shadow puppetry that dates back to 12th century Andhra Pradesh. In the state's native language of Telugu, 'Tholu' is hide or leather and 'Bommalata' is dance of the dolls. The puppets are used to narrate stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. These puppets were translucent and the light used to shine through them during the puppet show.
