About the Artform

When painting a portrait, you are creating an illusion. In a successful painting, the head appears to be 3D despite the fact that it is painted on a 2D surface. One of the techniques to create this illusion is called Chiaroscuro, meaning light and dark. If you master how to create light and shadow ( also known as value) and pay attention on the edges between the two, you achieve success in capturing the likeness.
