About the Artform

This is a pictorial artform emerging from the tradition of narrating stories from Ramayana or Mahabharata with the help of wooden puppets and paintings is known as, Chitrakathi or Pinguli tradition. The people who still practice the art of Pingul live in a village called Pinguli. They belong to Thakar tribal community. Chitrakathi style of painting is a 17th-century folk tradition and has a unique style of storytelling. It is practiced in Pinguli, a small village in the district of Sindhudurg, Maharashtra. "Chitra" means picture and "Kathi" translates to the story. Together, the term "Chitrakathi" was originally used to describe storytellers who narrated stories using visual aids called "pothis" accompanied by music. Traditionally, the themes of Chitrakathi paintings were Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas.

About the Session

In this session, the artist will teach you the age-old art form in a completely new and innovative way where you will be taught about it right from the basics, starting with introduction Chitrakathi Painting and intricate techniques and methods of creating it. All of the mentioned will be taught in a way to provide you with a complete hands-on experience of the art form by the end of the workshop.
This is a 'beginner-friendly' session. (Age: 10+).

Chetan Gangavane and Eknath Gangavane are traditional artisans of oral storytelling art, Chitrakathi. Both are brothers of the 6th generation members of their family and belong to the Thakar tribal community. Once popular in the Maharashtra-Karnataka region, this performing art includes telling tales with hand-drawn paintings on paper about historic or religious events in Pinguli style of painting. Their family have dedicated and their lives in reviving this languishing craft form. Their father, Parshuram Gangavane was recently awarded the Padmashree.
