About the Artform

Botanical illustration is the art of depicting the form, color, and details of plant species, frequently in watercolor paintings. They must be scientifically accurate but often also have an artistic component and may be printed with a botanical description in books, magazines, and other media or sold as a work of art. Bookmarks are fun little crafts because they were quick, and you could make them out of just about anything! Along with this, they add a personalized touch to your books and reading experience overall.

About the Session

In this session, you will learn about the art form starting with an introduction to Basic Watercolour Skills required for botanical art, the properties of different watercolor media e.g. opaque and transparent paint, usage of other paints used eg gouache and egg tempera, best brushes for a different technique. You will learn ways to apply paint wet on dry paper and wet on wet paper, dry brush on dry support and variations in between, and ways to create special effects: e.g. how to control a wash; how to paint fine lines, how to create hard and soft edges, glazing - layering transparent colors in such a way as to create an optical effect and lifting watercolor pigment as that requires knowledge of pigments and the support used (e.g. paper or vellum) as well as methods for lifting.
This is a 'beginner-friendly' session. (Age: 9+).
