About the Artform

Sohrai is a harvest festival in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal. It is also called the cattle festival. It is celebrated after harvest and coincides with the festival of Diwali. It is celebrated by Prajapati, Santal, Munda, and Oraons among others. Most of the colors used for the paintings are derived from mud. The red is derived from iron oxide and the black comes from a manganese-rich clay found in certain hilly areas.
