About the Artform

The Chitrakathi style of painting, a 17th century folk tradition practiced in the village of Pinguli in Maharashtra has a unique style of storytelling. "Chitra" means picture and "kathi" translates to story. Together, the term "Chitrakathi" was originally used to describe storytellers who narrated stories using visual aids called "pothis" accompanied by music. Traditionally, the themes of Chitrakathi paintings were Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas.
